Marine LitterWatch

The seas are filled with cotton swabs and toothpicks.

Every piece of plastic ever produced still exists on our planet. It's the sad truth. Here you can see which types of plastic that tops the list of waste in the oceans and on the coasts.

Plastic made its breakthrough in the 1950's and is now one of our favorite materials. But with the constantly increasing quantity of plastic the threat to our ecosystem and pantry is growing. In other words, "The plastic party" has to end NOW.

"Every minute we releases the equivalent of a truck into the oceans. By 2050 the quantum will have risen to six trucks per minute. Then there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans", warns environmental biologist and founder of the international environmental organization Plastic Change, Henrik Beha Pedersen, in his blog post.

App gathers data on waste on beaches

The European Environment Agency is responsible for the app 'Marine LitterWatch' that people and organized groups can use to report the garbage and waste that they find on the beaches around Europe. The cigarette butts are the absolute winner with 16.7 percent of the total observed waste (327,053 pieces in total, since the project started in 2013), followed by plastic lids, polystyrene pieces and shoppers.
